The basic function of a mattress protector is to protect the Mattress from any spillages, prevent dirt and moisture from staining and degrading your mattress, it can also keep potential allergens in your mattress at bay. Broadly there are two types of Mattress Protectors, Waterproof Mattress Protectors and Quilted Mattress Protectors. 
Waterproof Mattress Protectors as the name suggests do not let any spillages to seep through to the mattress and the top terry layer absorbs the spillage over a larger area. Additionally, it protects the mattress from dust, dust-mites, etc 
Quilted Mattress Protectors while not being waterproof are resistant to spillages and depending on the type of spillage it will protect the mattress from stains. While a thick liquid takes time to seep through while a more highly thin liquid like water penetrates easily.

The top layer of the Waterproof Mattress Protector is Terry to which a TPU membrane is Laminated at the bottom. The TPU(Thermoplastic Polyurethane) material is considered as an environmentally safe material of choice to sleep on for both adults and children.

As it is relatively thin, a waterproof mattress protector has little impact on a mattress' comfort and feel, also the TPU laminate is breathable which means that it will not trap body heat.

Machine wash using cold or mildly warm water and tumble dry at medium temperature as quickly as possible after spillage, preferably while still fresh and wet.

The waterproof mattress protector is designed to be impermeable to liquids thereby leaving no stains on the mattress but it is permeable to gasses and vapours, despite being waterproof. So you will need to use an odour freshener from a distance to eliminate the smell.

The waterproof mattress protector when subjected to constant spillages will be ideal for 1-2 years with proper wash care. When subjected to infrequent spillages and with proper wash care the protector can last for 3-4 years. It is ideal to have two protectors for each mattress.

A Waterproof Mattress Protector is like a Fitted Sheet covering five sides of the mattress wherein the Top Layer is Terry laminated with a TPU membrane and the sides are fabric with an elastic band running all along the edges.
While a Zippered Waterproof Mattress Protector encases all the six sides of the mattress with a Zipper on one of the shorter side of the mattress. The top layer remains Waterproof TPU laminated Terry and other five sides are covered with fabric.

It is similar to a Zippered Mattress Protector but the difference is that all the Six Sides of the Mattress are Waterproof and protected by TPU laminated Terry.
